Siegess�ule
Originally slated to be held
at the Brandenburg Gate, the German Live 8 concert was actually held at
the Siegess�ule.
The Siegess�ule is located 1.3 miles from the Brandenburg Gate. The word
Siegess�ule is translated to mean Victory Column. It was originally designed
by Heinrich Strack after 1864 to commemorate the victory of Prussia in
the Danish-Prussian war. Quite a fitting place for the German Live 8 concert.
Standing atop this wonderful column is a bronze figure of Victoria, the
Roman mythological goddess of victory.
An estimated 100,000 concert fans packed the Siegess�ule
Boulevard to watch the Live 8 Berlin concert. The screaming fans bounced
below the Victory Column which stands where the Berlin Wall once stood.
They clapped and danced to sounds of A-Ha. Audioslave, Bap, Brian Wilson,
Chris De Burgh, Die Toten Hosen, Herbert Groenemeyer, Joana Zimmer, Juan
Diego Florez, Juli, Katherine Jenkins, Reamonn, Renee Olstead, Roxy Music,
Sasha, Silbermond, Soehne Mannheims, and Wir Sind Helden. One of the Live
8 Berlin�s highlights was Green Day; who covered such tracks as American
Idiot and We Are the Champions.
The six-hour Live 8 Berlin concert was televised to the world and
is soon to be available here on the Live 8 Berlin DVD. Highlights including
Green Day are available on the official
Live 8 4 DVD set.
