The Italian Live
8 concerts were held in the breathtaking Circus Maximus in Rome, Italy.
The Circus Maximus is an ancient arena and mass entertainment venue located
in the valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills. The Latin word
circus, which comes from the Greek word kirkos, �circle, ring,� referred
to a circular or oval area enclosed by rows of seats for spectators.
It was the first and largest circus. It was first utilized for public
games and entertainment by the Etruscan kings of Rome. The Maximus was
used for chariot racing and it has been said that it could seat from 140,000
to over 250,000 people.
By 2:30 pm over 100,000 concert goers gathered in the ancient amphitheatre
of Italy�s Circus Maximus to show their support for Live 8 Roma.
Singer Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran told the crowd �We as a species
of humanity have to take responsibility for our brothers and sisters of
Africa�. The fans rocked at Live8 Italy and listed to top Italian stars
Irene Grandi and Jovanotti. Other extraordinary musical acts included
Antonello Venditti, Articolo 31, Biagio Antonacci, Faith Hill, Francesco
De Gregori, Francesco, Renga, Gemelli Diversi, Irene Grandi,
Laura Pausini, Le Vibrazioni, Max Pezzali, Negramaro, Nek, Noa,
Tim Mcgraw, Tiromancino, and Claudio Baglioni.
