Live 8 South Africa - Johannesburg, Mary Fitzgerald Square
The South African contribution to the
Live 8 concerts was held in Johannesburg at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in
the heart of Newtown. Named after one of the first female trade unionists, the
square was launched with much fanfare by President Thabo Mbeki in December 2000.
The Live 8 South Africa event was held in this area because this is where a wide range of
activities including concerts, carnivals, film screenings, markets, and
exhibitions often take place.
Listed in alphabetical order, the following acts played
Live 8 South Africa on July 2, 2005.

4Peace Ensemble, Jabu Khanyile and Bayete, Lindiwe, Lucky Dube, Mahotella
Queens, Malaika, Orchestre Baobab, Oumou Sengare, and Zola.
