Dido at Live 8
Christened Florian
Cloud De Bounevialle Armstrong, Dido was born on Christmas Day in 1971.
She entered London's Guildhall School of Music at age six, and by the
time she reached her teens, Dido had already mastered the piano, the violin,
and the recorder.
Her nickname Dido was given to her by her mother who was a poet. The
nickname stems from Greek and Roman mythology. Elissa or Dido appears
as the founder and first Queen of Carthage in Tunisia. She is best known
from the account given by the Roman poet Virgil in his book Aeneid.
After touring with a British classical ensemble, Dido accepted a publishing
job. In the meanwhile she sang in a series of local groups before joining
the trip-hop outfit Faithless.
Faithless was led by her older brother, the noted DJ and producer Rollo.
As the group's 1996 debut album "Reverence" went on to sell
some five million copies worldwide, Dido began working on solo material.
She developed a lushly ethereal sound by combining elements of acoustic
pop and electronica. She; signed with Arista Records, and released her
debut CD "No Angel" in mid-1999.
The album was produced by Dido, her brother, Rollo, Rick Nowels and Youth.
Fused by both Dido's stunning voice and lyrical acuteness, the album travels
through various and diverse styles ranging from the fervent magnificence
of "Here with Me," the gentle soulfulness of "Thank You"
the deep dubbiness of "Honestly Ok," to the lyrical perversity
of "Don't Think of Me."
Dido combines her love for warm acoustic sounds with her brother's fascination
for beats and all things electronic. The album is both new and classic
at the same time. Most of all, it is the eminence of the songs that will
make this album both resilient and successful.
Dido did a fantastic job of her favorite songs "White Flag".
She was joined by Youssou N'dour for "Thank You" and "Seven
Seconds".
Dido and Youssou N'dour proved to be in great spirits on their mad dash
from concert to concert. After putting on a fantasic performance at Live
8 London in Hyde Park, the duo then took a helicopter to Cornwall England
where they performed at the Africa Calling Live 8 event at the Eden Project.
Next they took the Eurostar train to Paris, France for the French Live
8 gig, where they gave their final performance of the day.
