Joss Stone at Live 8
Joss Stone was born Joscelyn Eve Stoker in Dover
England on April 11, 1987. She grew up in the semi-rural county of Devon
and the county of Kent England. (home to Coldplay's
Chris Martin).
The first record to grasp the young artists' imagination was Whitney Houston's
"I Will Always Love You". Not surprisingly the first record
that she can recall purchasing was Aretha Franklin's Greatest Hits.
At age 14, Stone appeared on the BBC talent show Star for a Night. It
was this performance that cought the eys of Steve Greenberg; founder of
SCurve remembers most. She sang the Donna Summer hit "On the Radio",
and Aretha Franflin's classic "You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman.
Even at age 14 the musical wonder showed her prowess by matching the styles
of Gladys Knight, Dusty Springfield and Janis Joplin.
In recent articles she has also been compared with Bonnie Bramlett and
Aretha Franklin.
It was this unrefined talent that caused her mother to persuade Joscelyn
to change her name to Joss Stone.
Shortly thereafter she flew to New York and under guidance of Miami soul
legend Betty Wright was teamed with such musical greats as guitarist Little
Beaver, organist Timmy Thomas and keyboardist Latimore. In less than 4
days Joss had recorded a suite of soul gems.
In September of 2003 her debut album titled The Soul Sessions. The record
was a resounding success. It was followed up a year later by Mind, Body
& Soul. Mind, Body and Soul proved for once and for all that Joss
could do original music with a style of her own.
Joss again hit the headlines when it was announced that the clothing company
GAP, would be releasing Sarah Jessica Parker with the younger, hipper
Stone.
Joss has received three nominations at the 2005 Grammy's and her career
seems to be on the rise. It was reported at the Live 8 concert that Elton
John may be collaborating on a track with Joss Stone due out for release
this Christmas.
Backstage at Hyde Park, London; Joss had teh following to share:
"Everyone knows why it's important -- It's important to help people
who need it. That's why we're all here; to draw attention to people who
need to be helped."
