Keith Urban at Live 8
Keith Lionel Urban (born October 26, 1967 in Whangarei,
New Zealand) is a New Zealander - Australian country singer who is now
a highly successful musical artist in the United States.
Keith Urban began to playing the guitar while living in Australia at age
6 and dropped out of high school at age 15 to pursue a music career. Keith
later went to the U.S. and formed The Ranch. The Ranch's debut album failed
to gain commercial success and the members parted ways not long afterwards.
Urban went on to play as a session musician on albums such as Garth Brooks'
Double Live and Dixie Chicks' Fly, to name a few.
Following the break-up of Urban's band and the demolition of his engagement
to fiancee Laura, Keith resorted to drug abuse. He has since become clean,
but speaks openly of his darker times. He uses that experience in his
life to create more enlightened and effective music.
In 1999 Keith Urban released his self-titled debut album as a solo artist.
Keith Urban, went gold in the U.S. His first major album was
released in 2002, Golden Road went platinum in several countries. Finally
in 2004 Urban released Be Here and nominated for a Grammy Award.
He has also released Days Go By, a greatest hits collection.
Keith Urban has received greater attention by touring with his friend
Kenny Chesney for two years in a row. 2004 and 2005 represent big things
for Keith Urban. He embarked on his first headlining tour, "Be Here",
with tourmate, the up-and-coming Katrina Elam. Urban also did his first-ever
headlining tour of his homeland, Australia, titled the "Alive in
'05" Tour. Keith is currently working on the release of a live album
or DVD due out soon.
He appeared in the Live 8 Philadelphia concert on July 2nd 2005.
Keith Urban was quoted as saying "I was very passionate about doing
this," he said backstage. "I think artists in general feel a
sense of responsibility. Twenty years after Live Aid, it's a shame to
have to do it all again."
