Memories
- Live Aid vs. Live 8
I remember back in 1985
when Mick Jagger hit the stage along side Tina Turner at the
original Live Aid concert in Philadelphia. He was doing a
solo thing at the time and the Stones didn't play Live Aid,
but Mick did his thing and Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards
did their thing. The talk for the next couple of weeks was
all about how Mick Jagger ripped the skirt off Tina Turner.
A Live Aid wardrobe malfunction I guess you would call it.
I also remember that later in the day Keith Richards and Ron
Wood joined Bob Dylan onstage. If my memory serves me correctly,
they did a horrible couple of songs and Dylan even commented
about how some of the money should go to the American farmers.
He is soo out of touch. I am happy to know we won't be seeing
him for Live 8 Canada. (At least I haven't heard that he'd
be playing at any of the other events. Who knows, maybe Dylan
will show up at the last moment and do a duet with Shakira
at Live 8 Paris)
We finally find a spot to park and head out
to stand in the long line that goes into the park. As I get
in the park, I can't help but notice the huge Canadian flag
backdrop behind the Live 8 guitar logo. It makes me proud
to be a Canadian. I wonder if each of the other events has
their flag waving behind the Live8 logo. I wish I had brought
some sunscreen. I am gonna be a lobster for sure.
It's still early and starting to heat up.
I get hit in the head with a "ONE" - "MAKE
POVERTY HISTORY" beach ball. I was a little slow and
it bounced off my head out of my clutches. I am sure if I
can't buy on here I'll be able to find one up on e-Bay in
a week or so. I am guessing that my Live 8 Canada ticket might
fetch a pretty penny if I hadn't already bent it up in my
front pocket.
Radio personality Steve Anthony takes the
Live 8 stage with his usual banter. "Poverty sucks, man."
The crowd doesn't seem to buy into his stupidity and there
is a half hearted cheer.
The Live 8 Toronto event is about to begin and two sloppy
fools hit the stage. Tom Green and Dan Akroyd waddle on stage
for some stimulating pre-music chitchat. I think that was
their plan. I am not sure which one is more annoying. They
chanted "Canadians care! Canadians care!" and then
forced the Live 8 crowd to listen for the next 5 minutes about
how Tom Green must be for the war in Iraq because he is from
Petawawa. (For those outside Canada; Petewawa, Ontario is
home to one the Canadian forces base.) Dan Aykroyd is out
of touch and inappropriate. He should shut his fat trap and
focus on the day at hand. This isn't a concert about war.
He wasn't funny and looks like he could use a diet. He ought
to join Kirsty Alley on that Jenny Craig diet.
