![]() The Who at Live 8The Who is a band that has been in and out of the spotlight for more than 30 years. The original line-up for The Who was Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, Keith Moon and John Entwistle. It has been rumored that the name of the band came from when the group was brainstorming for names. The band members were already so deaf they kept saying, "The who?". Finally, someone suggested the Who as their name. Originally The Who were best known for their tracks, "I Can See for Miles", "Dogs", and "Magic Bus". During a down time, The Who's guitarist Pete Townshend quit using drugs and turned to the teachings of Indian mystic Meher Baba. Towshend would later become Baba's most-famous disciple and his following work would reflect what he learned from Baba's teachings. Towshend devised a story of a boy who becomes deaf, dumb and blind and removed from such earthly perceptions can then see God. When cured he becomes a messiah figure. It was this premise that led The Who to the writing of the hit album Tommy. "Tommy" went on to have a life of its own spawning ballets and musicals. The Who played the first Live Aid event back in 1985 with Kenny Jones on drums. The Who music CDs and Live 8 DVDs. |
